Excerpt from IN THE ZONE

It is over,
she thought.
But it is never over.
Even when there are no words.
Even when the stars
strain against the sky
to get there it's not over.
The world does not begin or end.
Neither do our lives.
That is but a fallacy we call for.
Even as all love goes on forever—
what the human heart can barely
grasp. And so when I can not reach you
I will not succumb to the pointlessness
of pain, and summon up extremes, but float here.
For the love I am calling on is buoyant.
Her waves are but a relapse
of bliss and relief,
washing up and over
before the silky retreat—
And there is so much room to hold you.
Even when you can't be held.
